FAQsEverything You Need to Know Before Enrolling
We've answered the most common questions parents and students ask about lessons, teachers, pricing, and how Narellan Music Centre works.
Do I need to bring my own instrument?
You do not need to bring the big gear. Our studio has the drum kits, pianos and keyboards ready to go, so there is no need to lug a kit or keyboard in. Just bring the portable things, like your own guitar or your drumsticks. To make real progress you will want your own instrument to practise on at home between lessons. If you do not have one yet, that is completely fine to begin, and we are happy to help you choose and source the right one when the time comes.
What ages do you teach?
We teach all ages, from 3-year-olds in our early childhood programs to adults and seniors rediscovering music later in life. Beginners, advanced students, and returning musicians are all welcome.
Are group and private lessons available?
Yes! Choose private 1-on-1 lessons for personalised progress, or group lessons for collaboration, confidence-building, and affordability. Our team can help you decide which suits your goals.
How much practice do students need each week?
We recommend 10 to 15 minutes a day for young beginners, 20 to 30 minutes a day for progressing students, and 30 to 60 minutes a day for exam or performance pathways. Our teachers show students exactly what to practice so they improve efficiently.
How qualified are the instructors?
Every instructor teaching at Narellan Music Centre is a professionally trained and carefully vetted musician who holds a current Working With Children Check (WWCC), which we verify, and brings genuine teaching and performance experience. Music therapy is delivered by qualified, independent music therapists.
Can I sit in on my child's lesson?
Absolutely, for most lessons parents are welcome to observe, especially in the first few weeks. As students gain confidence, many prefer a little independence, but you are always welcome. The one exception is Mini Musos: to set a clear expectation for our littlest musicians from day one, we kindly ask parents to wait just outside the room. In our experience it helps the class focus on the music and build their independence.
Do you offer trial lessons?
Yes, we offer trial lessons for all instruments so families can meet the teacher, experience the studio, and see if the lesson style is a good fit. There is no obligation to enrol afterwards.
Do you prepare students for AMEB or Rockschool exams?
Yes. We offer full exam preparation, including repertoire, technical work, aural training, sight-reading, and mock exam sessions. Students may also learn casually with no exam pressure.
How long are the courses and when can we start?
Lessons run year-round and continue right through the school holidays, so progress never stalls. The one exception is Mini Musos, which takes a break over the school holidays. We also run holiday camps and workshops during the breaks. Start dates are flexible: most families enrol for a full term, but you can join at any time and we will match you with an available teacher.
What if we need to miss a lesson?
Lessons are booked for a set day and time each week and are not rescheduled if missed. If you let us know at least 7 days ahead that you will be away, you will not be charged for that lesson. With less than 7 days' notice, the lesson fee still applies, and your teacher will send through the lesson content and resources so nothing is missed.
