What you will learn
Every student is different, so every lesson is paced to them. As a guide, here is how a bass journey usually unfolds with weekly lessons.
- Beginner. Finding your way around the fretboard, a steady right-hand technique, your first basslines, and locking in with a simple beat.
- Intermediate. Reading and timing, scales and arpeggios, playing through chord changes, and grooving in time with a drummer.
- Advanced. Styles from rock and funk to jazz and metal, improvising your own basslines, theory, and exam or performance preparation.
Private or group
Most bass players learn one-on-one, so every lesson is pitched to your level and built around the songs you want to play. Private lessons run for 30 minutes weekly, with longer lessons available on request.
Group lessons are a friendly, more affordable way to begin, and they suit bass beautifully, because playing in time with other people is the whole point of the instrument. Tell us what suits your family and we will match you with the right instructor.
Exam pathways, only if you want them
For students who like a clear goal, our instructors prepare optional AMEB and Rockschool bass grades, covering technique, reading, aural training, repertoire and mock exams. It is a tidy way to measure progress and build genuine discipline.
Just as many bass students never sit an exam, and that is completely fine. Most people pick up the bass to play in a band or to groove along to the music they love, and our teachers meet you exactly there.

Bass lesson questions, answered
Is bass guitar a good first instrument?
It is a fantastic and slightly underrated first instrument. With four strings and a clear role in the band, most beginners are playing real basslines early, which keeps motivation high. Groove and timing come first, and the theory follows naturally from there.
Do I need my own bass to start?
Not for your first trial lesson. To make steady progress you will want an electric bass and a small practice amp at home, and we are happy to point you to a good value starter setup before you spend much.
Can guitarists learn bass as a second instrument?
Absolutely. Many guitarists add bass, and plenty of what you already know about the fretboard carries straight over. Bass asks for a different job though, locking in with the drummer and holding down the groove under the whole band.
Do you prepare students for bass exams?
Yes. For students who want them, our instructors prepare optional AMEB and Rockschool bass grades, covering technique, reading, aural training and repertoire. Many students never sit an exam at all and simply play the music they love.
What ages do you teach bass guitar?
Bass especially suits teens and adults, whether you are a complete beginner or returning after a break. Motivated younger students are welcome too, and we will always tell you honestly if a smaller instrument or a little more time would set them up better.
