What you will learn

Guitar is one of the most rewarding instruments to start, because recognisable songs come quickly. Every student is different, so every lesson is paced to them. As a guide, here is how a guitar journey usually unfolds with weekly lessons.

  • Beginner. Your first open chords, smooth chord changes, simple strumming patterns and a handful of songs you actually recognise.
  • Intermediate. Barre chords, fingerpicking, riffs and lead lines, playing in time, and reading both chord charts and tab.
  • Advanced. Scales and improvisation, more demanding repertoire across styles, theory, and exam or performance preparation.

Private or group

Most students learn guitar one-on-one, so every lesson is built around the music they want to play and the pace that suits them. Private lessons run for 30 minutes weekly, with longer lessons available on request.

Group lessons are a friendly, more affordable way to begin, and they work beautifully for siblings or friends learning side by side. Tell us what suits your family and we will match you with the right instructor.

Exam pathways, only if you want them

For students who like a clear goal, our instructors prepare AMEB and Rockschool guitar grades, working through repertoire, technique, aural training and sight-reading. It is a great way to track progress and build genuine discipline.

Plenty of guitarists never sit an exam, and that is completely fine. Many students simply want to play the songs and styles they love, and our teachers meet you exactly where you are.

Good to know

Guitar lesson questions, answered

What age can my child start guitar lessons?

Most children are ready to start guitar from around age 6, once their hands are big enough to reach across the fretboard comfortably, and a smaller guitar sized to them helps a lot. Younger children aged 3 to 5 love our Mini Musos early-childhood classes and move into guitar when they are ready.

Should we start on acoustic or electric guitar?

Either is a great place to begin, so it really comes down to the music your child is drawn to. Acoustic is simple and ready to play anywhere, while electric can feel a little easier on the fingers and is exciting for rock and contemporary players. Bring what you have, or ask us and we will help you choose.

Do we need our own guitar at home to start?

Not for your first trial lesson. To make real progress though, having a guitar at home to practise on matters, and we are happy to point you to a suitable beginner guitar in the right size before you spend much. A guitar sized to the player makes those early lessons far more comfortable.

Can my child play in a band or with other students?

Yes, and it is one of the best parts of guitar. Once a student is comfortable with chords and keeping time, playing alongside others comes naturally, and guitar pairs especially well with bass and drums. Plenty of our students go on to play together, and lessons can build toward exactly that.

Do you teach adults and complete beginners on guitar?

Absolutely. Guitar is a wonderful choice for adults, whether you are picking it up for the first time or dusting off one from years ago. Real songs come quickly, lessons are paced entirely to you, and there is no pressure and no audience.
