Adults often surprise themselves

Many adult learners tell us they wish they had started sooner. The truth is there is no perfect age to learn music, and adults bring real advantages to it.

  • You chose this. Adults practise with purpose, because the goal is your own rather than someone else's.
  • You know what you like. Naming the songs and styles you want to play makes every lesson focused and motivating.
  • Patience pays off. Focus and life experience help adults stick with it and genuinely enjoy the steady progress.

Whether you are picking up an instrument for the very first time or returning after years away, you are welcome here. Many adults come simply for the enjoyment, and for the way a weekly lesson clears the noise of a busy week. If you want to read more first, see our guide to learning an instrument as an adult.

How it works

Lessons built around your life

Adult lessons run weekly through the school term and are paced entirely to you. Here is how we keep them realistic for people with work, family and a full calendar.

  • Times around work. We hold weekday evening and Saturday slots, so your lesson fits your week.
  • Learn what you love. Bring the songs and styles you want to play. There is no fixed syllabus unless you want one.
  • No exams unless you want them. Optional AMEB and Rockschool pathways are there if you like a clear goal.
  • No audience, no pressure. Lessons are one-on-one with your instructor, at the pace that suits you.

Good to know

Adult lesson questions, answered

Am I too old to start music lessons?

No. There is no upper age limit on learning an instrument, and adults of every age learn at Narellan Music Centre, from people in their twenties through to retirees. Because you have chosen to be there and know what you want to play, you may progress faster than you expect.

I have never played an instrument. Can I still start?

Absolutely. Many adults begin from scratch. Book a trial, tell us the music or instrument that draws you, and we will match you with an independent instructor who teaches it. Piano and guitar are popular first instruments because they give quick early wins.

Can I have lessons after work?

Yes. We keep weekday evening and Saturday times for adults who work, with weekly lessons through the school term. Tell us your availability and we will find a regular slot that fits around your week at our Narellan studio.

Do I have to sit exams or perform?

Not unless you want to. Exam pathways through AMEB and Rockschool are there if you like a clear goal, but most adults learn purely for enjoyment. There is no audience and no pressure. Your lessons are one-on-one and paced entirely to you.

How much do adult music lessons cost?

Private one-on-one lessons start from $49 for 30 minutes, and group lessons from $35. Book a trial lesson, so you can meet your instructor before you commit. Longer lessons are available on request.
