You know your child best

A gentle, encouraging start to music

Starting music as a child should feel exciting, not daunting. The independent instructors who teach at Narellan Music Centre are chosen for their patience as much as their musicianship, and they are used to settling a nervous five-year-old, channelling a busy seven-year-old, and giving a quiet ten-year-old room to shine.

There is no audition and no prior experience needed. The trial lesson lets your child meet their teacher and try the instrument before you decide anything, so the only thing they have to do is turn up and have a go.

Common questions parents ask

The worries we hear before the first lesson

If you are wondering any of these, you are in very good company. Here is how lessons usually work for younger learners.

Will they have the attention span?

Young children are not built for long, still lessons, and we do not ask them to be. A 30-minute lesson is broken into short, varied bursts of playing, listening and games, so focus comes naturally and the time flies.

What if they do not stick with it?

That is exactly what the trial lesson is for, so there is no commitment before you both feel sure. Interest tends to grow once a child can play a song they recognise, and our teachers work hard to reach that first win quickly.

Can I sit in on the lesson?

Yes, always. Parents and guardians are welcome in the room, and our lesson spaces are set up with that in mind. Many parents sit in at the start and find it helps them support practice at home.

My child is really shy.

One-on-one lessons suit shy children beautifully. It is just your child and the same patient teacher each week, with no audience and no pressure. That familiar routine is where quiet confidence is built, one small step at a time.

They have never played an instrument.

Perfect, that is how almost every child begins. No reading music, no prior lessons and no instrument at home are needed to start. See how we welcome brand-new starters.

How it works week to week

How lessons work for children

A weekly rhythm

Lessons run at the same time each week through the school term, so they become a familiar, settled part of your child's routine. That steady consistency is what turns first attempts into real, lasting skills.

You stay in the loop

Your child's teacher will let you know how they are going and suggest a few simple things to practise at home, so you can cheer them on without needing to read music yourself. You are always welcome to sit in.

Moments to shine

When a child is ready and wants to, we look for relaxed, low-pressure chances to play for family and friends. Performing is never compulsory, and for many children it becomes a real source of pride.

Safe hands

Your child's safety comes first

Narellan Music Centre is committed to being a child safe organisation, in line with the NSW Child Safe Standards. Every independent instructor who teaches here holds a current NSW Working With Children Check, which we verify as part of our child-safe practices.

Our studio and lessons are designed with children's safety, dignity and comfort in mind, and parents and guardians are always welcome in the room. If anything ever concerns you, we want to hear it.

Good to know

Kids' music lesson questions, answered

How long should a lesson be for a young child?

For most children a 30-minute private lesson is the right length, long enough to learn and short enough to hold their focus. Our instructors break the time into small, varied activities so young learners stay engaged. Longer lessons are available on request as your child grows.

What is a good first instrument for a child?

It really depends on the child. Piano and guitar are gentle, popular places to start, drums suit children with lots of energy, and singing is perfect for kids who already love to perform. There is no wrong choice, and we are happy to help you decide at the trial.

How much should my child practise at home?

Little and often works best. Ten to fifteen minutes most days will do far more than one long session the night before the lesson. We keep practice realistic and fun, so it feels more like play than a chore, and your child's teacher will suggest a few simple things to try each week.

What if my child is nervous or shy?

One-on-one lessons are wonderful for shy children, because it is just them and a patient teacher they see at the same time each week. That steady, familiar relationship builds trust and quiet confidence, and there is never any audience or pressure to perform before they are ready.

What if my child wants to try a different instrument later?

That is completely normal and welcome. Many children explore one instrument and then become curious about another. Because the early skills of reading music, rhythm and listening carry across, switching is easy, and we will help your child move on without losing momentum.
